Sony Says PlayStation 4 Will Last Eight Years

According to PlayStation boss, Jack Tretton, the PS4 will last as long as the current hardware generation has.

In an interview with Fortune, Tretton was asked if he thought the PS4 will last as long as the current generation.

"I believe it will," Tretton replied.

"The irony is that the PS1 and PS2 didn't go away for lack of consumer interest. They went away because of the ability to manufacture them profitably. As the technology got longer in the tooth, the cost of goods and the chipsets that were state of the art when you originally launched the Playstation become difficult to manufacture cost-effectively.

"So in both cases, there was still plenty of demand out there. If we could have manufactured it profitably, there's no reason why it couldn't still be out there on retail shelves."

Honestly I would have expected both the PS4 and Xbox One to last even longer, as we heard from E3 2013, the next-gen consoles are so powerful that developers have pretty much "unlimited freedom" when it comes to creating games.

What do you think? Will the next gen consoles last 8 years?
