Aion Storyline

"After the creation of Atreia, Aion made Drakan and employed them to look after the humans within the world. Eventually the Drakan began abusing their powers by wreaking havoc amongst humans, laying waste to their bodies and rebelling against the creator. Five Drakan in particular began to rise above all others, and it was these five who renamed the Drakan as Balaur. At this point Aion allowed 12 humans to become Empyrean Lords and charged them with the protection of all others around them from the Balaur. What followed was an extensive conflict lasting 1000 years, thus known as the Millennium War. As battles raged on, some humans realised that they could harness the powers within Aether, the life force of Aion, thereby allowing them to ascend to a new, stronger form of beings, known as Daeva. These Daeva played an integral role in the fight against the Balaur, and they too sought the defence of humankind.

Soon a number of the Empyrean Lords felt that peace must be negotiated with the Balaur in the midst of what seemed to be eternal aggression, while the rest disagreed with this notion. When the Balaur had been invited to the Tower of Eternity (Aion's physical manifestation in Atreia) one of their leaders was assassinated, none know of the culprit. This caused chaos and the Balaur began to attack the Tower itself, the destruction of which split the world in two - an event known as The Epic Cataclysm. This splitting left half of the population in darkness, in a world that had to adapt in order for its survival. Its inhabitants became pale in their skin, grew claws and talons, their eyes began to glow red due to the lack of light, whereas their counterparts, now basking in a prosperous world, took on a more beautiful form. The inhabitants of the darker world were given the name of Asmodians, while those living on illuminated lands were called Elyos. Their worlds split them not only physically; to this day a bitter fight is endured between the two races and many have fallen prey to the hatred they have for one another, each laying the blame of the world's near destruction on the opposing race."
