Executive producer Shannon Posniewski recently announced that Champions Online will be adopting a free-to-play model. New heroes in Champions Online will also be able to choose a new "Archetype," a class-like build that streamlines the character generation process and makes power selection mechanics easier to use. The majority of the game is now free, but existing fully-customized champions still require a paid subscription.

The free-to-play model has been shown to work well in a lot of other MMORPGs so it is no surprise that the bigger MMORPGs are following suit.
