MMORPG trials have always baffled me. How can anyone truly see what an MMORPG is about in 7 or even 14 days? When you have such a limited time to check out such huge game worlds, often, you don't even bother. Blizzard finally realized this and has announced that the World of Warcraft trial playing time will be extended to an unlimited number of days. Standard restrictions of the trial still apply: Your max level is capped at 20, and your use of sending messages and using the auction house are limited.

This seems to be a step toward WoW becoming F2P, which in my opinion, would be a good thing. A lot of people just don't want to or cannot afford to pay monthly for a game they may not have time to play that often. Being able play the trial up to level 20 with no time restrictions will be great for World of Warcraft, and if you still haven't tried it out, now would be a great time to enter the world of Azeroth. Level 20 may not seem like much, but the first 10-20 levels include a lot of great content in the newest expansion, Cataclysm. You can also try out different classes and races and get a feel for each one (up to level 20) to see which class / race combination best suits you.

It seems like with The Old Republic and other interesting MMORPGs on the horizon, Blizzard wants to give people another reason to choose WoW over the competition.

HanbitSoft will be running an open beta for Hellgate starting on June 30, 2011. Early in June, the game underwent a three day closed beta. The open beta will include a PVP dual arena, zombie infected cow room, and two new game modes.

Deadly Premonition is coming to the Xbox Live Network on July 5th, 2011. Here is a quote from Martin Defries, managing director of Rising Star Games:

"Deadly Premonition is a quirky and unique title we are proud to have published. We knew there was an audience for the title and we delivered them the game they wanted. The Battlefield 3 co-op campaign will support two players and will include 10 maps.

Executive producer Patrick Bach has revealed that the 10 maps in co-op mode have been designed specifically for two players.

Patrick also commented on the whole Battlefield 3 vs Modern Warfare 3 battle:

"We’re trying to build the best Battlefield game that we’ve ever built, so it doesn’t really change how people want to position it, and how consumers see it or how media likes to portray this,” he said to Gamespot. “To us it’s important to stay focus on building a Battlefield 3. We don’t want to play second fiddle or be a copy, no one wants to be the cover band, you want to be the star,” he said. “So trying to copy someone else will also put you in second place. We know that we can build great Battlefield games and that’s what we’re doing here as well."

Both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are now over 5 years old, and it is about time for some new consoles. Sony and Microsoft will be announcing their new consoles sometime over the next few years. Epic and Crytek are already getting their gaming engines ready for the Playstation 4 and Xbox 720. (The name Xbox 720 is not yet confirmed. Xbox 720 is currently only a pet name for the next Xbox console)

In an interview by Next Gen Biz, Epic co-founder Mark Rein has commented on the updated Unreal Engine and the upcoming Xbox 720 and Playstation 3 consoles:

"We’ve already built next-generational features into UE3. If you saw Samaritan at GDC this year, that was super-high-end stuff. We didn’t hide the fact that that is our proposal for what next gen should be. And those DX11 features have been in the UDK since just after GDC, so customers have been working with that for several months. We don’t know what the next-gen consoles will be, when they’ll come and how much power they’ll have, or how much of a generational leap there’ll be, so it’s really hard to say. But if the next generation of consoles is the DX11 generation, then UE3 can already do that"

"Does it become Unreal Engine 4? Possibly. We just don’t know yet. I think we’ll have a pretty good idea of that in about a year’s time"

The LEGO group has announced that the LEGO themed MMORPG, Lego Universe, will be going free-to-play this summer. This will allow players to play the full game as much as they want, but they will be limited to two of the game's 15 zones. Lego Universe will also be switching to free digital download instead of the current boxed product.

The current fee of $10 a month will be used to obtain a full access account which lets you explore the other 13 zones and allows you access to community features such as expansion packs and competitions.

There are currently no plans for micro transactions.

"We see LEGO Universe as a key element for our digital play division, and are adjusting the business model to make the game more accessible to players, without the immediate obligation to purchase or subscribe," said Jesper Vilstrup, vice president, the LEGO Group.

Lego Universe will join City of Heroes in the latest high profile MMORPGs to go free-to-play.

DirectX 11 Ultra Upgrade

The DX11 Ultra Upgrade is a free visual improvement add-on introducing DirectX 11 support as well as a wealth of graphical improvements and perfomance optimization for both DX11 and DX9 API's.

When using the new "Ultra" spec DX9 platforms will beneficiate from the realtime local reflections and contacts shadows. The owners of DX11 platforms, in addition, will be able to enjoy hardware tessellation (requires the installation of the “Tessellation Package”), parallax occlusion mapping and several improvements for shadows, water, particles, depth of field and motion blur.

Crytek had also put up descriptions for both the Tessellation Pack and the High Res Textures pack, both of which are free to download.

DX11 Tessellation Pack

This free package containing pre-tessellated geometries is neccessary in order to be able to enjoy hardware tessellation on DirectX 11 graphcis cards. A compatible DX11 graphics card is required.

High Res Textures

This high resolution textures package provides higher textures resolution for a wide variety of assets. It supports both the DX11 and DX9 versions of Crysis 2. A 64 bits operating system and graphics card with at least 1 GB memory are required.

In addition, they've also learned a powerful new skill, how to ride. GamersGate has announced a new FreeGames service at E3. The service will allow you to have up to five games available for free on your account. When you launch and play the game, you will see ads. The revenue from these ads goes directly to the publishers.

The FreeGames beta will be released in mid June.

Sony has announced the release date of the PS Vita. The system will be available holiday season 2011 for $249.99 (wi-fi version) / $299.99 (3G model).

For those who have an ATI card and picked up Red Faction Armageddon you may have noticed that the DirectX 10/11 modes are buggy. Currently the only solution is to use DirectX9 which is stable and loads faster.

DirectX9 is also currently performing much better than DirectX10/11 on ATI cards, people have reported to be getting much better performance while the graphic quality remains pretty much the same.

From a thread on the official steam forums, the only people who seem to be having this problem are those with ATI cards.

Master Chief is back and ready for a new Halo Trilogy.

Found on the Blizzard job website is a vacancy for a "Playstation 3 Specialist" in the Diablo III section.

"Blizzard Entertainment is seeking an enthusiastic senior software engineer to be a key contributor on the Diablo team," the job posting read. "This position is responsible for overseeing PlayStation 3 (PS3) architecture design as well as other PS3-specific game code development to maximise platform performance. Responsibilities are to "design, implement, and maintain game systems to work on the Playstation 3".

No word on an Xbox 360 version though. The only reason they would not also release it on the Xbox 360 is probably because Microsoft would not allow Blizzard to run BNET through Xbox Live.

Blizzard will hopefully clear this up and release more information at BlizzCon in autumn.

"It's as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets," Abrams said of the just-announced plans to develop movies based on Portal and Half-Life. "Which is that we are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas."

"And both a Portal and Half-Life movie are things I want to see," Abrams said. "We're also aware of the cautionary tales of movies that became games and vice versa. Our goal here to is to treat the world Valve has created in both these properties like anyone would a book or some great story that comes from a pitch or original script — just to treat it with the respect they treat their games and their players with."

Here is a list of the highest earning events in Forza Motorsport 3. Run these if you want to make some credits to buy a new car or tune your current ones. Note that some events are much longer than others, so it's best to find events that have good rewards but also don't require 10 or more laps.
